One of the best, toughest, and non-partisan reporters the United States is so very fortunate to have.
Jonathan Karl is ABC News' chief Washington correspondent and co-anchor of This Week. A former president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Karl has covered every major beat in Washington — the White House, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon, and the State Department — reporting from the White House under four presidents and more than a dozen press secretaries.
Karl has reported from more than 30 countries and covered seven presidential elections. During the 2016 cycle, he landed the first network interview with Donald Trump, the first interview with Bernie Sanders as a presidential candidate, and a rare exclusive with the reclusive billionaire Charles Koch. Named The Tyndall Report's most-used network reporter in both 2017 and 2018, Karl logged more airtime than any other correspondent during the first two years of the Trump presidency.
Before his current role, Karl served as ABC's senior political correspondent and, earlier, as the network's senior foreign affairs correspondent covering the State Department alongside Secretaries Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. He reported extensively from war-torn Darfur, earning an Emmy nomination. Prior to ABC News, he was a congressional correspondent for CNN. Karl graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College.
